Friends Helping Friends: Speaking the Truth in Love to Your LGBTQ+ Friends
Session One: Where does LGBTQ+ Identity Come From?
Why do certain people identify themselves as LGBTQ+? Are such identities inborn? How is sexual and gender-related struggle the same as, and different from, other kinds of struggle? What might change look like for someone who has same-sex or gender-related desire, but doesn’t want to identify themselves as LGBTQ+? These questions, and others will be addressed in this session.
Session Two: Speaking the Truth in Love
The ways in which friends are called to engage with other friends who are caught in a pattern of struggle or sin is to “speak the truth in love.” But what exactly is “the truth?” And what does expressing “love” look like in this context? What does it look like to engage LGBTQ+ friends who might not share your worldview? Learn how to love your LGBTQ+-identified friends well here.
Saturday, May 4th, 8:40am – 11:30am
Equipping Your Kids to Navigate a Sexually-Broken World: A Workshop for Parents and Adults Who Care for Kids Ages 5-18
Session One: Explaining LGBTQ+ Idenity to Your Child
Children experience the confusing dynamics of “nonstraight” sexual and gender identities in school, in the media, and in the culture at large. How can parents clearly understand these terms and identities? How can they then explain them to their children in ways that will both cultivate a biblical worldview of sex and gender, and enable their children to exercise discernment? How can parents teach their children to respond compassionately, without compromising truth, to others who don’t affirm a biblical concept of sexuality or gender? Explaining LGBTQ+ Identity to Your Child will prepare you to do.
Session Two: How Do I Help My Child With Their Sexual Struggles?
Children and teens have always experienced sexual temptation and struggle. However, since the advent of the Internet and social media, they are being exposed to sexualized images and messages at a younger and younger age. Left alone, many of those young people will develop unbiblical, selfish, and self-destructive worldviews about sex, sexuality, and gender.
These young people aren’t just in the wider culture—they’re covenant children, in the Church. How can parents and church leaders help children who have been exposed to pornography, or are unsure of their sexual or gender identity? This session will help you learn how to redemptively engage your child and point them back to God’s majestic design for sex, sexuality, and gender.
Saturday, May 4th, 8:40am – 4:00pm
Shattered Dreams / New Hope: First Aid for Families of an LGBTQ+ Loved One
Session One: Reflecting: Getting Perspective on What You’re Facing
When a child reveals their new sexual identity, there are many emotions that a parent experiences, but often the focus remains on the child. This session will help parents to care for their own hearts before they begin to care for their child. This leads them to a deeper relationship with God, which equips them to better love and pursue their child.
Session Two: Moving Forward: Connecting with Your Child and Community
This session will help parents learn how to lovingly pursue their child based on how God has pursued them, by becoming an ambassador of Christ towards their child as Paul talks about in 2 Corinthians 5. This session will give parents fresh perspective and practical steps on how to stand firm in what they believe, while actively seeking a relationship with their child.
Session Three: Looking Back: Gaining Perspective on Where You’ve Come From
How do sexual and gender struggles develop? Where does sexual sin come from? Are these struggles inborn and unchangeable, or can they be overcome? What motivates us to make the sexual and gender choices we make?
Your child’s sexual identity is not just about their behavior and how you can fix it. It goes much deeper than that; it’s a matter of the heart. The Harvest USA Tree Model in this session is a biblical approach to understanding how sexual struggles develop and how the gospel changes our hearts and our lives.
Session Four: Embracing the Now: New Dynamics in Family Life
This session will explore the changed relational issues parents face in their marriage and with their other children. It will also explore how to respond to a variety of practical issues: attending weddings, hosting partners in the home, name change/pronoun preference, etc.
** Lunch will be provided for the day long seminar
